Useful Energy Saving Tips for UK Households

Heating & Hot Water

Insulation & Draught-Proofing

Insulation & Draught-Proofing

  • 1. Turn your thermostat down by 1°C
A single degree reduction can save the average UK household around £80–£100 per year while still keeping your home comfortable.

  • 2. Use your heating controls
    Modern boilers work best with:
  • Programmers: Heat your home only when you need it.
  • Room thermostats & TRVs: Set different temperatures for different rooms.
  • Smart thermostats: Track usage and avoid unnecessary heating.

  • 3. Bleed your radiators
Cold spots mean poor circulation, causing your boiler to work harder. Bleeding your radiators helps them run efficiently.

  • 4. Insulate your hot water cylinder
A simple cylinder jacket costs under £20 and can save around £70 a year.

Insulation & Draught-Proofing

1. Stop heat escaping
Up to a third of home heat is lost through walls. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and floor insulation are all major long-term savers.

2. Draught-proof windows & doors
Self-adhesive draught excluders or brushes around doors help keep warm air in and cold air out.

3. Use heavy curtains
Close curtains at night to reduce heat loss. Thermal curtains can boost savings even further.

4. Check Current Insulation is sufficient

Check you current insulation is sufficient. A well insulated loft space can save heat escaping. We can check this for you by offering a FREE survey and help obtain a grant to replace or increase your insulation if required.

Efficient Electricity Use

Efficient Electricity Use

1. Switch off standby
Turning appliances fully off (TVs, consoles, chargers) can save around £50–£70 per year.

2. Replace bulbs with LEDs
LEDs use up to 90% less electricity and last much longer.

3. Be smart with kitchen appliances

  • Boil only the water you need.
  • Use lids on saucepans to speed up cooking.
  • Use the microwave instead of the oven when possible.

4. Use eco modes
Modern dishwashers and washing machines have low-energy cycles designed to reduce electricity and water use.

Water Savings

Everyday Behaviours That Add Up

Efficient Electricity Use

 1. Cut shower times
Reducing showers by just 1–2 minutes can save meaningful energy and water.

2. Install an efficient showerhead
Low-flow showerheads reduce hot water use without sacrificing comfort.

3. Wash clothes at 30°C
This setting is normally enough for everyday washing and uses less energy than higher temperatures.

Renewable & Low-Cost Upgrades

Everyday Behaviours That Add Up

1. Consider solar panels
Solar PV can significantly cut electricity bills, especially when paired with a battery. We can help you explore fully funded solar panel and heat pumps options.

2. Smart meters
A smart meter shows real-time usage, helping you identify waste quickly.

3. Heat pumps & modern boilers
Upgrading from an older boiler or installing a heat pump can drastically improve efficiency.

Everyday Behaviours That Add Up

  • Close internal doors to keep heat where you need it.

  • Avoid overfilling fridges and freezers—they work more efficiently when air can circulate.

  • Dry clothes outdoors when possible; tumble dryers are heavy energy users. When drying items indoors, if you can use a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air as this typically is cheaper to run than your heating. Don't forget a dehumidifier will also produce slight heat from its air outlets.

  • Use natural sunlight to warm rooms by opening curtains during the day.
